It all starts on the ground.

Earthworks Before Building: The 4 Phases and What to Expect

15 October, 2026

Before a house, a warehouse or a pool goes up, there is a job that hardly anyone sees once the build is finished, yet everything else depends on it: earthworks. A well-planned excavation avoids delays, cost overruns and problems with the site management. A poorly planned one can stop a project before it even starts.

If you are planning to build in Nerja or the Axarquía, here is what you should know about how professional earthworks are organised, phase by phase.

Phase 1: technical site visit

Everything starts on the ground, not in the office. Before committing machinery or deadlines, a technician visits the plot to assess three key things:

  • Soil hardness: digging in soft ground is not the same as digging through rock, and it changes the machinery required and the pace of the work.
  • Access: many plots in the Axarquía have narrow tracks or steep slopes. We need to check whether the low-loader that transports the machine can get there.
  • Surrounding constraints: neighbouring properties, walls, existing services, room to manoeuvre and space to stockpile soil.

This diagnostic phase is what prevents surprises later. That is why, at Excavaciones Benítico, the technical visit is free of charge.

Phase 2: fixed quote and the right machine

With the data from the visit, a detailed quote is prepared, broken down by hours or by unit price per cubic metre. The aim is for you to know from the start exactly what the job includes, with no hidden costs.

This is also where the right machine is chosen for each case. An oversized machine makes the job more expensive; an undersized one drags out the schedule. Choosing well from the outset avoids cost overruns.

Phase 3: execution to plan

Then comes the day of the job. The assigned machinery arrives on time and the work follows the project drawings, carried out by certified operators.

Continuous coordination with the site management team or the owner matters at this stage, so that any adjustment can be resolved on the spot and the excavation ends up exactly as the project requires: levels, slopes, trenches and finished heights.

Phase 4: spoil removal and handover

Earthworks do not end when the excavator stops. What remains is often what separates a job done correctly from a job done well:

  • Loading and removal of surplus soil to an official landfill in the Axarquía.
  • Full cleaning of the access route, leaving the area in good condition.
  • Handover with a signed acceptance and CDW certification (construction and demolition waste, known in Spain as RCD).

Frequently asked questions

How long do earthworks take? It depends on the volume, the type of ground and the machinery needed. After the technical visit, a realistic timeframe can be agreed for your plot.

Do I need a permit before digging? It depends on the type of works and the municipality. The usual approach is to check with the town hall and the technician in charge of the project before starting.

What happens to the surplus soil? It is loaded and taken to an official landfill, with the corresponding paperwork.

Can the machinery reach my plot? This is checked during the technical visit. It is one of the reasons why a quote should never be given blind.
